Derek & Nikki – Wedding

Derek & Nikki opted for a destination wedding in Amsterdam – the Netherlands where Derek’s roots are. They invited all their friends and family over from the USA. It was a weekend full of celebrations, laughter, drinks & dinners and so much love. Despite the typical Dutch weather – their love was celebrated abundantly. It was an epic weekend to remember!

As Derek & Nikki live in NYC they visited Holland to discuss the details and plan their wedding with Myrthe of Myrthe Regelt Het – they combined their visit with an introduction at my home in Zwolle. We clicked right away and the rest is history. Derek & Nikki are such warm and kind people. I wouldn’t have missed their wedding for the world.

Why did you decide to get married?
We really felt that making a commitment to each other in front of our friends and family was important in our growth as a couple.

How did you find your weddingdress?
I had no idea what style of dress I wanted. My mother and I went so many sample sales and a few boutique wedding ateliers in NY, where we live. I was a budget-conscious bride when it came to the dress. I knew that I wanted something really special but I was also aware that this would be something I would wear only once. Elizabeth Fillmore was having a trunk sale and I fell instantly in love with the art-deco style of this really simple dress. The sample fit like a glove and there was no turning back. She is a NY based wedding dress designer and we worked closely to create the cape that I wore for the ceremony.

Which dress is it?
It was a Elizabeth Filmore Sophie gown.

What was your favourite part of the day?
I couldn’t choose one moment. The entire weekend was more than I could have ever dreamed of. If I had to choose ONE it would be my husband’s vows. We decided to write our own, and he surprised me with his words of love.

Have you been nervous about planning a wedding?
Wedding planning was stressful. I wanted to have an event that would be personal, unique to us and really really FUN for everyone who attended. Choosing our wedding planner, Myrthe Regelt Het, was the best decision we could have made. Myrthe helped us to streamline our ideas but also encouraged us to think outside the box. We also came to love her as a friend and it was really sad to say goodbye at the end of our wedding weekend.

What things did you save on?
We saved a big on decor by not having cut flowers at our reception.

And what did you splurge on?
FOOD AND DRINKS! We wanted to make sure that our guests were well fed.

Any golden tips for engaged couples?
Hire someone you trust to help you plan, be conscious of your budget and COMMUNICATE!
